History
Custom titles are a default feature in the vBulletin software that GFF runs on, although they were not aways enabled. Until 2004, custom titles were an exclusive privilege given to Staff as well as members that fulfilled a certain prerequisite (4750 posts and 150 days of membership). Normal members received predefined titles that automatically changed after set postcount milestones.

Titles defaulted back to Wark! from 2225-2249, after which it resumed again with Chocorific. | NYRSkate contributed some "hidden" titles which mostly persisted for only a single postcount value.

Drama
In April 2003, custom titles were temporarily granted to members as part of the April Fool's Day proceedings. The privileges were removed a few days after the event.
The boards crashed in May, and the subsequent board wipe meant that certain members (like Xellos, Pangalin and Musharraf), who would have been entitled to a custom title, never managed to acquire them. This was a topic that periodically incited bouts of drama.
In June 2003, the issue surfaced once again, initiated by a split from the GFF Advisors thread in which Pangalin attributed the problem of spam to custom titles. Bobo responded to this with another thread in Board Support where he proposed lowering the postcount requirement to 3333, and membership period to 120 days. However, this did nothing to stem the complaints, and bobo finally announced in frustration that custom title privileges would be abolished altogether. Much of the staff voluntarily gave up their custom titles in light of the new policy.
Custom titles for everyone
In January 2004, bobo launched the ill-fated ChocoSponsor donation drive, where contributors were promised custom titles along with other incentives. However, the rewards were never implemented.
When April Fool's Day 2004 rolled around, everyone was given custom titles, following the tradition from the previous year. However, this time the privileges were never taken away. The forum members rejoiced with their new-found individuality!
Thus ended the debate over custom titles.
