Idea

NYRSkate, mid-January 2005, proposed the idea of having a "Gamingforce Survivor" contest, where 20 players would battle their way to becoming the ultimate survivor of the so-called "INTERNET ISLAND". A (mysteriously un-identified) group took the 61 people who applied, narrowed that group down to 20 and divided them into two groups of ten, Spin'Na and Tild-Dar. With the tribes sorted out, the contest began on January 20, 2005.

Spin'Na Alliance Breakdown

The below is written by a member of Spin'Na, so it could be incorrect. Please correct if there's a problem.

When the game began, Talbain paired up with StarmanDX as partners to split the team in half, and basically run one side of the team against the other while keeping their alliance a secret. Both partners approached members on an individual basis, with StarmanDX approaching Bradylama, Pom, Simply Majestic and Izlude. As expected, Bradylama, Pom, and Izlude had already allied with each other as the Star Chamber, and provided no response to StarmanDX; however Simply Majestic was available, and pledged his alliegance to StarmanDX. Talbain targeted AliceNWonderland, Devolution7, Galatea, and Sian, and received responses from each of them, assuring individual alliances with Talbain but without Talbain mentioning the other alliances he had to each member. Talbain was subsequently invited into the Star Chamber alliance with Bradylama, Pom, and Izlude, in which he used information to steer his allies to vote them off, but also cause intereference to prevent voting off his own allies. Talbain and StarmanDX were able to use this voting block to vote out Bradylama and Pom. During this time, Galatea had to leave the game for health reasons, and Monkey King was approached by both StarmanDX and Talbain, and he said he was loyal to both. The removal of Pom and Bradylama, coupled with the tribal merge which removed the inactive Izlude, Monkey King, and Sian, secure Spin'Na's alliance and their stranglehold on the game. Post-merge, after voting out Aperama and Aardark, AliceNWonderland removed Talbain from the game with her perk received from an immunity challenge. As a result of this, after voting out SonnyD64 to keep the numbers on their side, Spin'Na voted her out of the game. Devolution7 then teamd up with StarmanDX to get to the end of the game. After voting out Seris as the last of the Tild-Dar, Spin'Na's alliances did not matter as StarmanDX was allied with both members left, and took the high road, voting out Simply Majestic, and taking Devolution7 to the finals.

Tild-Dar Alliance Breakdown

The below is written by a member of Tild-Dar, and as such could be mildly incorrect. Sorry.

TEAM INTERNET, the alliance of Ritler, SonnyD64, Pom, Aperama and Kuradoberi, had a heavy hand in the initial actions of Tild-Dar (though Pom was in Spin'Na.) Having made a tentative alliance with Agent Ed to assure that the votes would stay balanced in their favour, they dictated the initial few votes. However, after a Photoshop-oriented challenge, divisions came up in TEAM INTERNET, as Agent Ed was attempting to sway Kuradoberi into a personalised alliance with him. After Ritler's controversial reaction to Pom's leaving of Internet Island along with Kuradoberi's "betrayal" (siding with Agent Ed, unfortunately to no avail as he was the next one to be voted off as Seris, CetteHamsterLa and Aardark had the deciding votes), the initial members of TEAM INTERNET were drawn back to 2 (SonnyD64 and Aperama.) When Aperama was taken out of Internet Island as a result of a tribal merge, TEAM INTERNET was no more, and the only alliance in Tild-Dar was disbanded.

Challenges

Challenge #1

Each tribe was given the challenge of writing a twenty post story, with each member of the tribe writing exactly one line of story per post. If one person posted out of order, the entire story had to be re-written. Spin'Na finished first, and won immunity.

Both stories involved pirates.

As a result, ava lilly was voted off the island.

Challenge #2

Both tribes where given the same set of 50 questions. The first tribe to reach 40 correct questions would win; this was Tild-Dar.

As a result, Bradylama was voted off the island.

Challenge #3

An Arcade challenge with the games Chopper Challenge, Curveball, and Snake. Spin'Na averaged the highest scores on all three games, and won immunity.

As a result, Jpnezeshorty was voted off the island.

Challenge #4

Both tribes were given an image to edit. The tribes then submitted the two images they felt were most worthy, to be put in a public poll for the rest of Gamingforce. Talbain's image won, and Spin'Na was granted immunity.

As a result, Agent Ed was voted off the island.

Challenge #5

Another Arcade challenge, with Asteroids, Missile Strike, and Pac-man. Each tribe was supposed to supply five people to play all three games. Spin'Na tribe again won all three games, but Tild-Dar did not even submit five different scores for the latter two.

As a result, Kuradoberi was voted off the island.

Challenge #6

Each tribe was required to supply two members, each of whom would register an account at the FileFront forums (http://forums.filefront.com/), then try to get banned as quickly as possible. A ten post minimum was required. Tild-Dar won the challenge by one minute.

As a result, Pom was voted off the island.

Challenge #7

Each participant was given a list of 50 posts, and had 45 minutes to identify what Gamingforce member each post belonged to. Only the top nine scorers would remain on the island. Izlude, Sian, and Monkey King were removed instantly for not participating; the remaining tiebreaker between AliceNWondrland and CetteHamsterLa, much to the chagrin of several islanders, was decided by a vote in which any Surivor could be voted off.

As a result, Aperama was voted off the island.

Challenge #8

Another arcade challenge, this time the only game was MiniGolf. SonnyD64 won immunity with a score of 153.

As a result, Aardark was voted off the island.

Challenge #9

Each particapant was instructed to write a message, at least 50 words in length, and put in a public poll. AliceNWondrland's story was voted the most moving; not only did she win immunity, but also a special perk in which she could remove any other participant from the game.

As a result, she chose to remove Talbain, and SonnyD64 was voted off the island.

Challenge #10

Another Arcade challenge, in which the game was Balloon Bomber. Devolution7 won immunity.

As a result, AliceNWondrland was voted off the island.

Challenge #11

Each participant was instructed to find and submit the most ridiculous image they could find on StreetStyle (http://streetstyle.drjays.com/), which was then put in a public poll. StarmanDX won immunity for the round.

As a result, Seris was voted off the island.

Challenge #12

Each participant was instructed to submit a screenshot of their longest time holding the button at Hold the Button (http://www.holdthebutton.com). StarmanDX won immunity with a time of 15 hours and 34 minutes.

As a result, Simply Majestic was voted off the island.

Final Tribal Council

In a vote including the other seven members who survived the tribal merger, StarmanDX won the event by a 6-1 vote.

Outcome

StarmanDX won the event, and was given three prizes: The ability to go over the usual name-length limit (for which he chose the name Axelrod Gunnarson), increased avatar and signature limits (50k and 100k, respectively), and halfops in #gfchat. In the end, Miles was actually the staff member who awarded the prizes, as NYRSkate was on a brief leave of absence.

Another possible prize discussed was the re-opening of the Testing Forum on a trial basis, which several staff members did not look upon favorably.

The only side outcome any other player received was Ritler, who upon creating nearly 50 threads at once was not only booted off the game, but received a temporary ban from the entire forums.

Opinion of the event, for the most part, was negative mixed with disinterest. Early interest in the game flourished in the signup thread, but it diminished as the game continued without the drama which everyone had been expecting. Since most communication between allies was through private messages and chat, the forums were not able to get a full view of what was going on. When votes were cast, initially they were displayed for people to see, but when support for the game diminished, so did the effort which was put into the contest.

The most visible problem was that towards the end of the contest, NYRSkate slowed down the pace of the game almost to a crawl, causing the players still in the game to get restless and the rest of the forums to get bored with the whole idea. All in all, the game is viewed currently as less of a success, even though nebulous ideas for a GFF Mole project get floated now and again.
